What It Does:
Copies itself to your Windows system directory.
Adds itself to your computer's registry so that the infection runs when Windows starts.
Downloads malicious files from a remote server and runs them on your computer.
Injects itself into running processes.
Displays false warning and security report alerts with infection warnings
Suggests to download cleaner tools and sends users to websites where they can download rogue protection software.
How It Infects:
FakeAlert can be distributed by any means, including but not limited to:
Email attachments
Instant messenger attachments
Infected websites
Hyperlinks to infected websites from email or instant messages
Downloading by other malware
Through peer-to-peer networks
How To Avoid Infection:
Do not click any unexpected links in instant messages. Do not download email attachments from unexpected sources. Do not download unknown files or files from unknown sources. Scan all downloaded files with StopSign and ensure that all updates are installed from Microsoft's Windows Update.
